2218 CE: Humanity's expansion into the outer solar system is turning violent. Megacorporations are engaged in a ruthless competition for resources and power. Corporate PR flacks do their best to keep the public ignorant, while mercenaries like you do the fighting and dying.
The setting of Starfighter Inc. is our own solar system 200 years from now. Bogged down by terrestrial politics and conflict, the development of the solar system progressed slowly. Private commercial interests took the lead in resource mining, energy production, deep space manufacturing, and later, even food production and settlement.
As the offworld economy grew, the power of terrestrial nation states faded to insignificance while giant corporations, the "MegaCorps", seized control of the solar system. "Nations" are now just another brand to be exploited like "royal families".
We begin in the Saturn system at a time when development of the outer solar system is accelerating, and the MegaCorps are fighting for control of Saturn and its moons, in particular Titan and Enceladus.
Titan is the most valuable of Saturn's moons. It is a proper world in its own right, with a dense atmosphere and enough mass to produce gravity almost as strong as Earth's moon. More importantly, it has hundreds of times more liquid hydrocarbons than all the known natural gas and oil reserves on Earth! It is also covered in organic chemicals - several hundred times more than Earth's coal reserves!
One of the most important facilities at Titan is the space elevator that makes extracting those resources possible. Propatulus Union controls the elevator and operates Meridion Station, a vast processing facility and transhipment hub that acts as a counterweight for the elevator. ProU leases laboratories, fabrication spaces, storage tanks, cargo bays, and hangars to numerous companies, and has contracts with most of the other MegaCorps.
One of those is Northstar, itself one of the oldest MegaCorps with a heritage going back to 20th century aerospace companies such as Boeing, Embraer, Thales Group and others. Northstar's interests range far and wide throughout the solar system, but for one key resource: fissile materials. This puts them at the mercy of ENRA (Extraplanetary Nuclear Resource Association), a cartel formed by the companies that control the vast majority of known reserves.
ENRA has not been shy about exploiting its power, leading Northstar and others to seek alternatives. Two solutions have been proposed. The first is finding a suitable asteroid rich in fissile materials, and then redirecting its orbit to place it in the Saturn system. Northstar has already succeeded in doing this. The second is more ambitious - the long-awaited conversion to a fusion-based economy that will depend on Helium 3 mining at Saturn. The cartel is not pleased with either of these developments and will do whatever it takes to preserve their position.
Most of the MegaCorps have subsidiaries devoted to arms manufacturing and security services, but none rely wholly on their own internal security forces. Instead they turn to the many private military firms that provide contractors trained in combat. This allows them to externalize the risks and claim plausible deniability when needed. Two of the most well known of these are Space Recon and Starfighter Inc.
And then there are the wild cards such as the Lethe, a radical anti-corporate faction formed by the victims of an horrific tragedy that they blamed on Northstar, but could never prove. They have vowed revenge and will stop at nothing to get it. There are disturbing reports about illegal research into antimatter weaponry. If true, the solar system may be heading toward the most destructive war in history.
And potentially the most lucrative for pilots with the right set of skills.

These are the ships that you will take into battle. Each is a formidable nuclear-powered spacecraft that can be armed with a variety of weapons. Pilots select the configuration that best fits the combat role they've been hired for, or simply to suit their preferred play style.2018-01-03 14:41:23
